Pelvic health = Whole body health

A physical therapist explains aspects of pelvic floor treatment to a patient

It seems like everywhere you turn these days someone is talking about pelvic floor PT. You can’t scroll through instagram without seeing someone telling you when to contract or relax your pelvic floor based on the beat of a song. Or maybe that’s just my biased algorithm?

So, is it just kegels?

Short answer: no. It’s so much more than kegels.

Your pelvic floor is a part of a group of muscles that help to pressurize your abdomen, making your spine stiff and strong. This is what lets a gym rat deadlift 200+ lbs, a mom pick up both of her kids at the same time, or a golfer generate enough power to make it to the green.

It also has to coordinate with your hip musculature to help you transfer the force you are moving and distribute it across the rest of your system.

If you’re leaking with running or jumping, your pelvic floor may be taking on the brunt of the force from the ground instead of sharing the load with other muscles (think calves and hips).

When you want to relax, if you are still sucking in your stomach, your pelvic floor may have a hard time letting go.

The moral of the story: you are a whole person.

We’re not just treating your pelvic floor. We are treating your whole system.
